when I was in high school, guy in my senior class got a brand new Typhoon or Syclone* (bought by his parents, local “well-to-do” family.)
of course he blew up multiple engines and driveline components in the first six months.
*not 100% sure which anymore. age will do that to you

Which is a perfect example of why a new car shouldn’t be a first car.

Hell, I’m about ten cars and 16 years into driving and I’m still not ready for a new car!

I’m ok with parents buying something cheap (like sub $2,000) with the understanding that the kid is responsible for maintaining it. Or if I had kids, I might use it as an excuse to buy myself something different and pass off my old cheap car to them.

my experience growing up is the kids whose parents bought them cars trashed them in short order. ‘cos hey, it ain’t their money.

Given my experience with Dakotas, I’ve tried to find a Durango. They’re all rusting away to nothing...

I found that to be the case for anybody who got a new car, because they knew if they wrecked it they’d just get a replacement. One of my neighbors got one of those Harley-Davidson F150s brand new at 16, wrapped it around a tree, and they just bought him another one.
But if you give a kid a $500 beater, and tell them that if it breaks, they’re stuck taking the bus, that kid might take care of that car.

I ended up with an ‘06 Ram because unlike Sacramento, Virginia doesn’t have Dakota’s in the condition that mine was in. :(

I actually, strangely, would love a performance SUV. I’d go all in for a performance minivan, too.
